On Saturday 24 November this year, the Arizona State Sun Devils beat the University of Arizona Wildcats in the Territorial Cup football game by a score of 41-40. ASU rallied after trailing 40-24 in the 4th quarter to win the game. No Pity for the Kitty indeed!
We learn from the American myth of “Bargains with the Devil” that ill-gained riches have calamitous consequences. When Fortune turns on those who play this demonic game, let the evil they have brought upon themselves play itself out. Sodom and Gomorrah incurred the righteous wrath of God; yet angels warned us not to interfere with their destruction and commanded not to look behind us on peril of disaster. At night, the Exterminating Angel smote the firstborn of the Egyptians; still we marked our doors with blood and did not go out of our houses until the morning of that terrible night.
People do what they want to do. The reason we have two accused sex offenders (Thomas and Kavanaugh) in the Supreme Court (I believe both Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford) is because the majority of the American electorate wants them there. The conservative lamentations over Blasey Ford’s testimony against Brett Kavanaugh amounted simply to an aggregate, unsavory tantrum voiced by old, pathetic men who were displeased at the loss of one of their traditional entitlements—the liberty to use and abuse women.
The Supreme Court nomination process—like all things in this country—is ruinously tainted by racial politics. Had Anita Hill been white, her accusations against Clarence Thomas would have been believed; had Kavanaugh been a black man, Blasey Ford’s allegations would have been eagerly welcomed. This infamous Kavanaugh affair leads to an irrefutable conclusion: if you are African-American and have had a lasting, positive impact on American culture (as Bill Cosby has had) and are convicted of rape, you go to jail. If you are white and have spent a lifetime wheeling and dealing in our clown politics (an achievement in no way commensurate with that of Cosby), and are accused of rape, we don’t investigate you; we simply welcome you as a lifetime member of the Supreme Court. In the meantime, Blasey Ford and her family are still receiving death threats.
To those who may find my “No Pity for the Kitty” advice harsh or inhuman: I say that I did not dance on the grave of Fidel Castro, but I am also unwilling to interfere with providential misfortune when it befalls inveterate liars, child abusers, bullies against women, corrupt government officials and war criminals. We are prone to extol too many of them as patriots, retire them with hefty pensions at the expense of the taxpayers they fleeced or reward them with lucrative book contracts for their villainies. We also appoint them to the Supreme Court.
What a country! What a world!
