They Came for the Children

Somewhere in Bernard Shaw’s Caesar and Cleopatra, the Irish Sage reminds us that when a stupid man does something he is ashamed of:  he always claims it is his duty to do so. In our miserable times, when a shameless man or woman does something dreadful that they enjoy, they always claim the law commands them to do so, even when no law exists to that effect. And when they engage in acts of perverted humanity, actions that can only arise from the diseased topographies of the soul, they claim—in an inversion of the classic serial killer excuse—that God made them do it!

Witness our deeply flawed Attorney General, who in an attempt to defend the indefensible, to justify the forcible separation of children from their immigrant families at the southern border, resorts to the Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. It will be worth our while to quote the passage he believes justifies the mistreatment of children:

Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

For he is the minister of God to thee for good.

KJV, Romans 13: 1-4.

Sessions would have us believe that God has ordained Trump as minister and himself (Sessions) as his acolyte. If we resist them, we resist the ordinance of God. He insists that our souls (our souls mind you!) should be subject to Trump’s God and his minions, because they are good for us. If we do not, Sessions claims, we will receive damnation.

If children were not being abducted by the US government, we could dismiss the above as the mindless babble of a senile old man. The harrowing photographs by John Moore (found here) of Central American young people at the border have become the symbol of the Trump/Sessions immigration policy as firmly as the famous photograph of the naked, napalmed girl became an icon of the Vietnam War.

We know from the tale of Isaac and Abraham that Christians forsook child sacrifice early in their history. Yet this sad, pathetic man (Sessions), speaking for his mean, cowardly president (Trump), quotes scripture in order to justify his own and his president’s depravity. Here is how true Christians view the present US policy towards immigrant children:

And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

KJV, Matthew 18: 5-7

We learned from the Salem Trials that the Devil is prone to use the Bible to delude us, and so we say to Trump, Sessions and their enablers that we see no light of God in them or in the cruel deity they worship. We resist their ordinance and are much less afraid of their power than we are of Christ’s millstone around the neck and death by drowning in the sea. And if what we do results in damnation, we’ll be glad to pass eternity in a realm without Trump and Sessions, and without child abusers.

Republicans are terrified that Democrats will come for their guns one day. Now the rest of us know: when Republicans come for those of us who they deem Others, they’ll come for the children.
